Why it evolved
Repeated volcanic ashfall necessitates adaptations for survival in a drastically altered aerial environment. The Ash-Winged Sylph has evolved a 'Resonance Scour' ability to passively clear particulate matter from its respiratory system and wing surfaces, mitigating the effects of the ash. Increased heat resistance in its plumage and more durable wing membranes allow it to withstand proximity to volcanic vents and the abrasive ash. The trade-off is a slight decrease in flight agility due to the heavier, more robust wing structure, making it more vulnerable to aerial predators in clearer skies.
