Why it evolved
The sharp cooling of the climate makes prolonged deep burrowing energetically costly for thermoregulation. The Sand-Diver's descendant evolves a thickened exoskeleton for better insulation against the cold desert nights, and develops sturdier limbs for surface locomotion across the cracked salt pans. This allows it to expand its foraging range to include surface-dwelling prey like the Dust-Stinger, though it loses some of its sand-swimming efficiency due to its heavier build.
