Why it evolved
As the climate cools, selection favors individuals with greater cold tolerance. This descendant evolves a thicker, more insulating bark and produces antifreeze compounds in its tissues, similar to terrestrial plants facing frost. These adaptations reduce its overall size slightly to minimize surface area exposed to the cold. The trade-off is increased energy expenditure on producing protective compounds and maintaining thicker cell walls, potentially slowing growth during brief warmer periods.
