Why it evolved
The arrival of the larger Inkmantle predator, which likely uses bioluminescence to hunt, has selected for a reduction in the Glint-Darter's reflective traits. Descendants have evolved darker, less conspicuous flanks and a slightly smaller size to evade detection. This decreased visibility comes at the cost of reduced intraspecific signaling in the dark, oxygen-poor waters, potentially impacting mating success.
