Why it evolved

To outcompete the Vent Bloomworm, Resilient Siltworm, and Deep Silt Excavator for resources and space within the subterranean fissures, the Armored Siltworm has evolved sharper, more pronounced dorsal spikes. These spikes deter predation by larger rivals and can inflict injury during territorial disputes. The slightly higher gravity of the Scarred Expanse makes increased burrowing speed crucial for escaping threats and claiming territory, a trait further enhanced to leverage the worm's muscular body. The trade-off is increased energy expenditure for spike growth and more aggressive territorial behavior, potentially leading to more frequent injury from conspecifics.
