Why it evolved
The pressure of isolation and limited resources on this isolated population drives selection for energy efficiency and reproductive strategies suited to sparse conditions. Enhanced chemoreception allows it to detect scarce food falls over greater distances. Asexual budding allows for rapid colonization of new, small pockets if resources are found, while a dormant state conserves energy during extended periods of scarcity. The trade-off is reduced mobility and a slower rate of population growth, making it vulnerable if its isolated habitat is disrupted.
