Why it evolved
With the collapse of usual food sources, this lineage has intensified its reliance on its existing enhanced chemosynthetic symbionts and developed increased metabolic efficiency to conserve energy in the oxygen-poor waters of Verglas. The larger mouth now serves more for opportunistic scavenging of any organic matter, including smaller organisms like the Rime-Mat or Ice Limpet, rather than efficient grazing. This increased metabolic efficiency comes at the cost of reduced growth and a dimmer lure, making it less effective for attracting prey and requiring more effort to maintain its symbionts, pushing it closer to a scavenger role.
