Why it evolved
A virulent disease or parasite load selects for individuals with enhanced immune responses and physical defenses, leading to a thickened, more resistant cuticle. To minimize exposure to airborne pathogens and the intense daytime heat of the Sunscoured Flats, the Dune-Scourer becomes more subterranean, investing in stronger burrowing appendages. This increased reliance on burrowing comes at the cost of reduced surface foraging efficiency and a slightly smaller overall size, but improves survival against disease and the harsh diurnal temperature swings.
