Why it evolved
Cut off from the wider Tethys Shallows, this population faces increased competition and potential habitat loss. Selection favors individuals that can more efficiently exploit remaining resources and avoid predation by the Verdant Tidewallow Gulpfish. Enhanced burrowing allows them to hide from predators and access the oxygen-scarce muck for food. The reduced pelagic stage conserves energy and resources when dispersal is no longer viable, a trade-off for potentially slower growth compared to the Verdant Tidewallow. The warm, shallow waters of Tethys Shallows provide the necessary conditions for these adaptations to persist, though reduced mobility is a cost.
