Why it evolved
The opening of a new ecological niche favours pioneers that can exploit it. This siphonophore has diverged by increasing its metabolic rate and developing active hunting strategies, including bioluminescent lures to attract potential food, a trait amplified by the constant darkness of the JoJoLands abyss where light signals can be highly effective. This shift from passive drifting and scavenging to active predation comes at the cost of energy inefficiency compared to specialized predators, but allows it to occupy the newly available role.
