Why it evolved
The environmental toxicity PRESSURE has driven the evolution of chemosensory detoxification glands and modified gill filaments in the Detox Gulpfish. These adaptations allow the fish to actively process and neutralize heavy metals and other pollutants, a crucial survival mechanism in the Tethys Shallows' increasingly toxic waters, especially considering the plentiful oxygen which might otherwise facilitate absorption of airborne toxins. This specialization comes at the cost of a slightly reduced metabolic rate, potentially making it slower to react to predators like the Mud-Stalker.
