Why it evolved
The introduction of a new predator has driven the evolution of camouflage and enhanced sensory perception. Darker pigmentation and reduced bioluminescence make the Shadow Angler harder to spot against the dark seabed and under-ice ceiling, especially in the oxygen-poor, dimly lit waters near the vents. The enhanced lateral line allows it to detect approaching threats from further away. This increased reliance on stealth and sensory input comes at the cost of its bioluminescent lure, reducing its ability to attract the small invertebrates it used to supplement its diet, and a slightly reduced metabolic efficiency due to the darker coloration requiring more energy to maintain.
