Why it evolved

In perpetual darkness, the enhanced bioluminescent lures of the Umbral Lure Siphonophore become even more critical for attracting prey in the vast, lightless open water. Selection favors individuals with more potent lures and the ability to detect faint chemical trails, leading to the development of chemosensory pits. While this increases hunting efficiency, the constant energy expenditure on bioluminescence and advanced sensory organs, coupled with the lack of light for photosynthesis-based symbionts (if any were present), necessitates a slightly slowed metabolic rate and reduced reliance on visual cues, hence the reduced visual acuity. This trade-off means slower overall movement but more effective energy capture in its niche.
