Why it evolved
The Frosthearth's shifting salinity creates a powerful selective pressure for organisms that can tolerate or actively manage these changes. The Haline Lurker evolves highly developed osmoregulatory organs, allowing it to actively pump salts in or out of its body to maintain internal homeostasis, a crucial adaptation for survival in the planet's ephemeral, variable freshwater and hypersaline environments. This specialization comes at the cost of reduced olfactory sensitivity, as energy is redirected to ion regulation, making it less effective at detecting prey by scent alone, and a trade-off with camouflage for better osmoregulation.
